Candelilla REAL®: Natural par Excellence
Candelilla REAL® is a product developed and manufactured by the Mexican Corporation Multiceras. The product is based on high purity Candelilla wax and it is available in pastilles, flakes, spray powder and micronized powder presentations.
Candelilla Wax is obtained form the wild plant named Euphorbia Cerífera, which belongs to the
Euphorbiaceas
family. The plant grows normally in zones of semi-arid climate and presents an aspect similar to cacti, from which it clearly differentiates by the milky latex produced by the Euphorbiaceas.
The Candelilla plant grows almost exclusively in a semi-arid region of North America, known as "The Chihuahuan Desert". The major extension of this desert is located in Mexican territory and comprises regions of the Coahuila, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Durango and Chihuahua states, extending its borders to the limits of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona in the United States.
Candelilla wax is a 100% natural substance, hard, stable, protective, plastic, and easily moldable.
With a color ranging between brown and light yellow, its surface can reach high levels of brilliance, which is one of its most valued properties for a variety of specialty applications. It easily dissolves basic dyes. It is insoluble in water but highly soluble in acetone, chloroform, benzene and other organic solvents.
The majority of Candelilla wax components are naturally found in vegetables and fruits. Its chemical composition is characterized by a high hydrocarbon content (around 50%) and a relatively low amount of volatile esters. Its resin content can reach 40% by weight, a factor contributing to its sticky consistency. It can harden other waxes without significantly increasing the melting point of the blend.
Candelilla wax is
classified
by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a natural substance GRAS- Generally Recognized As Safe- for applications in the food industry and is widely used in a diversity of sectors in this industry.
Candelilla REAL® is used in a wide diversity of applications, being currently used in more than 20 different industries worldwide, mainly in the European Union, United States and Japan. Its distinctive properties make it an essential raw material for the manufacturing of cosmetics, gum base, inks, dyes, adhesives, coatings, emulsions, polishes and pharmaceutical products.
In the cosmetics industry, due to its protective properties, Candelilla REAL® is indispensable for an important range of formulas used in the production of lipsticks, body lotions and hair preparations.
For its plastic properties, Candelilla REAL® is used in the production of chewing gum. Moreover, its oil retention properties contribute to better conserve flavors, for which this wax has demonstrated its advantages over the majority of synthetic waxes used in this industry.
A specialty application can be found in the precision foundry and mold industry where, due to the extraordinary molding properties of Candelilla REAL®, it permits a precise reproduction of every detail, as required in these
stringent
manufacturing processes.
Its chemical stability, high melting point, impermeability and
dielectric properties, make it highly useful in the
manufacturing
of a diversity of products for the electronic and electrical industries.
There are many other applications where Candelilla REAL® is currently utilized, including cardboard coating, crayons, paints, candlewick,
lubricants, paper coating, anticorrosives, fruit coatings, waterproofing and fireworks.
